A special public outreach project involving Kosovo’s Serb community has been launched. The project is being run by the Serbian non-governmental organisation (NGO) ‘Youth Dialogue Programme’ and is supported by EULEX.
A series of roundtable discussions and question and answer sessions are taking place around Kosovo to explain the role of EULEX and how it can help improve the Rule of Law for everyone.
The first event took place at the youth centre in Rahovec / Orahovac and it was organized by Youth Dialogue Programme and local partner organization NGO Konak. The meeting was well attended by members of the local Serbian community. Representatives from the EULEX Police, Justice and Customs Components were present.
“We are trying to bring together all Serbian NGOs and local community representatives,” said Srdjan Vezmar from the Youth Dialogue Programme, which is based in Novi Sad.
“The aim is to show why and how EULEX is important to the Serbian community and how the Mission can be of practical use to people in their everyday lives,” he added.
Tanja Viikki, from EULEX’s Policy Unit, has taken a lead role in the project. “This is exactly the type of link EULEX wants to build with civil society,” she said.
“We are trying to understand peoples’ needs and concerns in the field of Rule of Law and working out how best we can respond. But people should remember that the Mission has only been operational since December and real progress is going to take time.”
When the panel discussions have been completed there will be three special training sessions run by the Youth Dialogue Programme where people can learn in a practical way how EULEX can benefit local people.
The remaining roundtable discussions will take place in March in Štrpce / Shtërpcë, Osojan / Osojane, Novobërdë / Novo Brdo, Mitrovicë/a north, Leposavić / Leposaviq.
